A combination of day trips to historical and beautiful locations in Yorkshire and walks in the surrounding country side. We will be joined by local guides and historians. Morag Walks has two different places it stays. The White Lion Hotel in Hebden Bridge www.whitelionhotel.net and Walshaw Lodge www.walshawlodge.com a breathtaking place up on the beckoning hills just beyond Hardcastle Crags. This is the landscape that helped shaped the work of Poet Laureate Ted Hughes; we will visit the places of his childhood. Hebden Bridge is a small village with traditional village shops, but has quick access by train or road to other parts of the country. We will be surrounded by the history of centuries, its architecture, and breathtaking scenery as evidenced by a visit to Heptonstall. We wander through Hardcastle Crags, now owned by the National Trust and stop for a visit at the Gibson Mill, an early 19th century cotton mill lying in the beautiful wooded vale of Hebden Dale. When cotton weaving declined in the late 19th century, it enjoyed a new life as a popular tourist destination. The National Trust now presents the buildings as a model of environmental self sufficiency. We take a canal boat trip along the Rochdale Canal. We will visit Haworth home of the Bronte sisters and walk to Wuthering Heights. A highlight is our train trip to York to visit, amongst other attractions, its Minster. You will explore, by train, bus and foot a part of England and meet some of its people.
